What are the benefits of daily aspirin therapy with Ecotrin®?

Aspirin therapy with Ecotrin® helps keep the blood from clotting. By keeping the blood thin and keeping it flowing, Ecotrin® can help to contribute to your heart health. The FDA approves aspirin therapy with Ecotrin® under a doctor's supervision to reduce the risk of a heart attack. In addition, Ecotrin® is safer than plain or buffered aspirin because it's always safety coated. In fact, Ecotrin® is specially designed for daily use.

Cardiologists recommend Ecotrin® more than any other brand of aspirin. You should talk to your doctor about Ecotrin® Aspirin therapy. Ecotrin® also provides relief from both pain and inflammation of arthritis and rheumatism.

What is the advantage of aspirin therapy with Ecotrin®?

Only Ecotrin® is always safety coated. The enteric coating helps keep Ecotrin® aspirin intact until it reaches the small intestine. Ecotrin® dissolves in the small intestine, unlike plain or buffered aspirin that dissolve in the stomach. This makes it safer for the stomach than plain or buffered aspirin.

What different strengths of safety-coated Ecotrin® aspirin are available?

Ecotrin® is the only aspirin brand that offers a complete line of safety-coated strengths — Low Strength 81 mg, Regular Strength 325 mg and Maximum Strength 500 mg. The various strengths of safety-coated aspirin Ecotrin allow doctors flexibility to recommend and prescribe the right dosage per patient.

Doctors usually recommend Low Strength or Regular Strength Ecotrin® daily aspirin therapy for heart health. Doctors usually recommend Maximum Strength to relieve the pain and inflammation of arthritis and rheumatism. Consult your doctor to see what strength of Ecotrin® you should use.

What causes a heart attack?

A heart attack can be a sudden and unexpected killer. It's caused by reduced blood flow to your heart such as when blood vessels narrow or become blocked in coronary artery (blood vessels to the heart) disease.

What can I do to reduce my heart attack risk?

There are many things that you can do to reduce your heart attack risk. Eating right and exercise can lower cholesterol and strengthen your heart muscle. Many studies have shown the benefits of taking an aspirin such as Ecotrin® every day for your heart if you already suffered a heart attack in the past. Ecotrin® aspirin keeps the blood flowing through your blood vessels. Be sure to join Here's to LifeTM, our FREE Heart Health Program. There are many different aspirin products. Which aspirin product should I take for long-term aspirin therapy and is stomach-safe?

You should take safety-coated Ecotrin®. Ecotrin® is different than plain aspirin. Ecotrin® offers the dose that doctors recommend to keep the blood flowing to vital heart tissue. Ecotrin's special coating makes sure that the Ecotrin® tablet won't dissolve until it passes through your stomach to be absorbed in the small intestine, thereby reducing the risk of stomach upset and bleeding. So you can take Ecotrin® every day knowing that the stomach damage and bleeding often associated with plain and buffered aspirin is reduced with Always Safety Coated Ecotrin® Aspirin.
Taken every day, Ecotrin® helps keep your blood flowing to protect your heart. Cardiologists recommend Ecotrin® more than any other brand of aspirin. Talk to your doctor about Ecotrin®.

If I suffer from arthritis, can I take Ecotrin®?

Aspirin therapy with Ecotrin® provides relief from both pain and inflammation of arthritis and rheumatism. The treatment of arthritis and rheumatism often requires chronic and long-term therapy. Always safety-coated Ecotrin® aspirin is especially suited for conditions requiring long-term aspirin therapy. Arthritis often requires higher dosages of aspirin. Ecotrin® safety-coated aspirin is therefore also available as Maximum Strength Arthritis Relief (500 mg).

How does Ecotrin® differ from plain (uncoated) or buffered aspirin?

Both plain and buffered forms are formulated to dissolve in the stomach, making the stomach more prone to aspirin-induced damage than it would be with Ecotrin®. The pH or acid content of the stomach is the key to efficacy of the special coating on Ecotrin®. See how Ecotrin® dissolves in the stomach.

Safety-coated Ecotrin® resists dissolution in the more acidic stomach (pH 2-4). Instead, the coating dissolves in the more basic environment of the small intestine, thereby releasing aspirin in the small intestine and reducing the risk of stomach upset and bleeding.

What is this little gray can in the Ecotrin® bottle?

The "little gray can" in the Ecotrin® bottle is placed there intentionally to absorb moisture and keep the tablets from sticking together. This is an additional measure Ecotrin® takes to ensure a high-quality and effective product.

Why does the Ecotrin® package list a precaution not to use the product in conjunction with certain medications?

Aspirin, including Ecotrin®, should not be taken with other blood-thinning (anticoagulant) drugs such as warfarin (Coumidin®). Aspirin, including Ecotrin®, is proven to reduce heart attack risk, it may exaggerate the effects of other blood-thinners and increase the risk of abnormal bleeding. A combination of Ecotrin® aspirin with other heart medications that affect the blood clotting might nevertheless be indicated. You should therefore always check with your doctor if Ecotrin® is appropriate for you and also to make sure your doctor is aware of all the medications (including supplements, herbals and over-the-counter medications) you are taking. Aspirin can interact with several other medications:

* Aspirin will counteract the effects of medications for gout such as probenecid (Benemid®).
* Moderate doses of aspirin may increase the effectiveness of oral diabetes (hypoglycemic) drugs, which may cause very low blood sugar levels.
* Aspirin may also counteract the effects of many medications for high blood pressure such as ACE inhibitors and beta-blockers and the effects of some diuretics in patients with severe liver disease. Also, a combination of aspirin with nitroglycerin tablets may lead to an unexpected drop in blood pressure.
* In addition, the possibility of stomach damage is increased if aspirin is taken together with other NSAID-type of arthritis medications such as Advil®, Motrin® or Nuprin® or with alcoholic beverages. Discuss with your doctor if you are taking any of these medications and for the appropriate aspirin therapy for you.

What does enteric-coated mean?

Enteric-coated is a specific coating on Ecotrin aspirin that prevents the aspirin from dissolving in the stomach. Instead, it dissolves and is absorbed in the small intestine, where most nutrients and drugs are absorbed anyway. Thus, the stomach lining is protected from irritation.

Can I use Ecotrin® if it has expired?

We do not recommend using Ecotrin® after its expiration date because effects of product usage during this period have not been fully tested.

Does Safety-coated Ecotrin® contain any calories?

No, Ecotrin® has no calories and contains no:
